The tournament which is held every other year is the equivalent of the Ryder Cup and sees the top professional lady golfers take on their American counterparts.

It will be the first time that the tournament has been played in Spain since it began in 1990. The competition has previously been held in Wales, Sweden, Ireland, German and most recently at the famous Gleneagles course in Scotland.

Next year’s tournament will be hosted in the United States at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Situated in the heart of the Costa del Sol, the Finca Cortesin course is renowned as being one of the best courses in Europe and was recently voted as one of Spain’s top five courses by Golf World and Golf Digest Magazines.

The exact dates are yet to be finalised, however, the news will be very welcome here in Spain which has seen its tourism industry heavily impacted by the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

Alexandra Armas, the Ladies European Tour CEO, said: “We are delighted to announce Spain as the host nation for the 2023 Solheim Cup when it returns to European soil for the 18th edition of this major international team golf event.

Spain is a passionate golfing nation with knowledgeable fans and a history of developing generations of talented golfers while Andalucía’s strong cultural heritage will make for a unique experience for players, guests and supporters alike. The tournament will not only enhance the country’s reputation as an elite golfing nation but the Costa del Sol as a must-visit destination, which will help to inspire the next generation of children to take up the game.

The Finca Cortesin course is located in one of the most tranquil and sought-after spots on the Costa del Sol and includes a luxurious five-star hotel, spa, fitness centre and even an exclusive beach club.
