Set on the southern coastline of Tenerife within easy reach of Tenerife Sur Airport, Amarilla Golf and Country Club is one of the island’s most popular and characterful golf destinations. Designed by the prolific British architect Donald Steel and opened in 1989, the course offers a compelling blend of seaside drama and inland variety that keeps players coming back season after season.

The front nine hugs the rocky Atlantic coastline, delivering some of the most visually striking golf on the island. The par-3 5th is the standout hole – played entirely over the sea to a cliff-edge green, it demands a composed tee shot that leaves absolutely no margin for error. Push or slice here and the ocean or the coastal path are waiting. The back nine climbs away from the coast into the lower foothills of Mount Teide, with a more modern design character that rewards precise ball control through the closing stretch.

Stretching to 5,929 metres from the tips (par 71), Amarilla is well suited to golfers of all abilities. The greens provide a consistent and fair putting surface throughout, and the course’s southern Tenerife location means ideal playing conditions for most of the year.

History

Amarilla Golf and Country Club opened in 1989, making it one of Tenerife’s longer-established courses. Donald Steel, who designed courses across the British Isles and Europe, was chosen to create a layout that would make the most of the club’s dramatic coastal position in San Miguel de Abona on the island’s southern tip.

The course has undergone significant maintenance and renovation work over the years, particularly on the holes closest to the sea, restoring them to their original quality and reinforcing Amarilla’s reputation as a solid and enjoyable holiday golf course. The club’s position – situated close to Golf del Sur and the main southern tourist resorts – makes it a natural inclusion on any Tenerife golf itinerary.
