One of Tenerife’s longest-established and most distinctive golf venues, Golf del Sur offers 27 holes of varied and challenging play across three nine-hole loops – the North, South and Links courses – all set against the striking volcanic backdrop of southern Tenerife. Any two of the three can be combined to create an 18-hole round of par 72, giving visitors the opportunity to experience different combinations across multiple days.
The Links course is the most celebrated of the three, famously incorporating black volcanic lava rock as a natural hazard. Wind off the Atlantic adds a genuine links dimension to play, and the combination of ocean views, volcanic terrain and open coastal exposure creates one of the most memorable and unusual golf environments in Spain. The North and South courses, while more sheltered, provide a more traditional parkland challenge with wide fairways, well-positioned bunkers and consistently good greens.
Originally designed by Pepe Gancedo and opened in 1987, the Links course was substantially remodelled by former Ryder Cup player and respected architect Manuel Pinero in 2005, bringing it up to the standards expected of a modern championship layout while retaining its distinctive character.
Golf del Sur opened in 1987 as one of the first major golf developments in the south of Tenerife, at a time when the island was establishing itself as a serious year-round golf destination. Pepe Gancedo’s original 27-hole design was innovative in its use of the natural volcanic landscape, creating a course with a character unlike anything else in the Canary Islands.
The 2005 remodelling of the Links course by Manuel Pinero brought fresh energy and modernity to the layout, addressing wear and updating the design to meet contemporary playing standards. Today, Golf del Sur occupies a central position in the south Tenerife golf scene, benefiting from its location within the Golf del Sur resort community and its proximity to Tenerife Sur Airport – just minutes away.
