Golf 4 U Spain Rating:
Key Features
Sitting at around 600 metres above sea level in the municipality of Tacoronte in the north of Tenerife, Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is a course steeped in history and prestige. The second oldest golf club in Spain, it offers a parkland experience that is markedly different from the more modern resort courses in the island’s south – cooler, greener, and with a traditional club atmosphere that serious golfers will appreciate.
The par-71 layout measures 5,740 metres and winds through mature vegetation with views of Mount Teide providing an ever-present backdrop. The course rewards precision and local knowledge – it is not the longest or most technically complex layout in Tenerife, but its undulating terrain, tight tree-lined fairways and genuine club character make it one of the most atmospheric rounds on the island. The cooler northern climate also ensures lush, green playing conditions that contrast pleasingly with the sun-baked landscapes of the south.
The club sits approximately 45 minutes from the main southern resort areas, which adds to its sense of escape and exclusivity. Visitors prepared to make the journey are rewarded with a genuinely authentic golf club experience, away from the bustle of the tourist circuit.
Real Club de Golf de Tenerife was founded in 1932, making it not only the oldest golf club in the Canary Islands but the second oldest in Spain. The course was established by a group of passionate club members – Antonio Lucena, Andrés Alberto, Joaquín Laynez and Aureliano Yanez – who laid out the original routing in the hills above Tacoronte in the island’s north.
Remarkably, the course’s fundamental layout has remained largely unchanged since its creation, a testament to the quality of the original design and the respect the club holds for its heritage. Over more than 90 years of continuous operation, the club has become a cornerstone of golf in the Canary Islands, nurturing generations of local players and hosting both amateur and professional competitions across the decades. It received Royal Patronage – reflected in its “Real” (Royal) designation – and continues to hold a special place in Spanish golf history.
