Course Information

Abama Golf

Perched on the sun-drenched western slopes of Mount Teide and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Abama Golf is one of the most visually spectacular golf courses in the Canary Islands. Designed by world-renowned architect Dave Thomas and opened in 2005, this par-72 championship course winds through an extraordinary landscape of volcanic terrain, incorporating 22 lakes linked by cascading waterfalls and over 25,000 palm trees representing more than 300 subtropical species.

Stretching to 6,271 metres from the championship tees, the course reaches an elevation of 315 metres above sea level, with virtually every hole offering breathtaking views across the Atlantic to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. The dramatic combination of lush fairways set against rugged lava rock and vivid blue ocean makes Abama a genuinely unique golfing experience – one that is as rewarding visually as it is challenging to play.

The layout demands accuracy and tactical thinking at every turn. Water hazards are a recurring feature, and the volcanic terrain creates natural undulation throughout. Despite the challenges, the course is accessible to golfers of all abilities thanks to its variety of tee options, and the immaculately maintained conditions ensure a premium experience year-round.

History

Abama Golf was developed as part of the wider Abama Resort project, which transformed a former agricultural site on Tenerife’s western coastline into one of the island’s premier luxury destinations. Dave Thomas, one of Britain’s most celebrated golf architects and himself a former Ryder Cup player, was commissioned to create a course that would take full advantage of the extraordinary natural setting while integrating seamlessly with the volcanic landscape.

Opened in 2005, the course quickly established itself as one of the finest in the Canary Islands, attracting visitors from across Europe seeking a high-quality year-round golfing destination. The resort setting, with its five-star hotel and extensive leisure facilities, has helped position Abama as a flagship golf destination on the island.
