Spanning 5,189 meters and overlooking Estoril and the sea, the Estoril Golf Club’s course winds through eucalyptus, pine, and mimosa trees, imparting a distinctive character. The uneven terrain, combined with the presence of these trees, emphasises accuracy rather than sheer distance.
Renowned for demanding strategic play, the Estoril Golf Course features visually striking par 3 holes, each presenting its own challenges. Among them, the 16th hole, a remarkable 179-meter-long Par 3, is widely regarded as one of the premier holes in Portugal.
Established in 1929 by Fausto de Figueiredo, Estoril Golf Club holds a rich history as one of Portugal’s premier golf destinations. Initially conceived as a leisure retreat for tourists and expatriates, the course’s first nine holes, designed by Jean Gassiat, opened alongside the Casino Estoril. The Club’s official foundation in 1945 marked the completion of the full 18-hole course, with Mackenzie Ross’s architectural touch enhancing its allure.
Throughout its storied past, Estoril Golf Club has been a hub for both amateur and professional competitions, hosting prestigious events like the Portuguese Open. Notable figures, including H.R.H. Count of Barcelona and the Duke of Windsor, frequented its fairways. The Club’s legacy extends beyond championships, fostering the development of Portugal’s golfing talent, with luminaries like Henrique Paulino and Joaquim Rodrigues emerging from its ranks.
Despite facing alterations over the years, including the reconfiguration due to the Cascais motorway, Estoril Golf Club maintains its historic charm. With a proud tradition of success in inter-club championships and a reputation for nurturing top-tier talent, it remains a cornerstone of Portugal’s golfing landscape, boasting a thriving community of players.
