Golf 4 U Spain Rating:
Key Features
Overlooking Machico Bay from the hills of eastern Madeira, Santo da Serra Golf Club offers expansive coastal views and a varied test of golf. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the 27-hole venue comprises three nine-hole loops: Machico, Desertas and Serras.
Machico and Desertas form the par-72 championship combination, measuring 6,241 metres from the white tees. Elevation changes, bunkering and demanding approaches keep the round interesting, with wind and altitude adding to the challenge of choosing the right club.
The Serras nine provides another option for a combination round, with mountain views and gentler terrain. Multiple tee positions allow golfers to choose a suitable challenge, making Santo da Serra an appealing choice for visiting groups.
Combine Santo da Serra with Palheiro Golf as part of your Madeira golf holiday. Explore our current Madeira packages for hotel stays with rounds at both courses.
Golf at Santo da Serra dates back to 1937, when the original nine-hole course opened. Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned the venue in 1991, creating the foundation of today’s 27-hole layout.
The club hosted its first Madeira Island Open in 1993, won by Mark James. Its long association with the European Tour has brought leading professionals to Madeira and established Santo da Serra as one of the island’s best-known sporting venues.
The clubhouse offers a comfortable setting for a post-round drink or meal, with a panoramic restaurant, bar, lounge and terrace. Views towards the coast make it a fitting place to unwind after playing the course.
